Prepare for Hurricanes Hurricane season is here! Take precautions now. At Home: n Know your area. If you are living in a neighborhood that floods quickly, become familiar with routes you can take if you have to evacuate. n Familiarize your home’s location in terms of vulnerability to storm surge and wind. n Make plans to secure your property. Permanent storm shutters can offer the best protection for windows. A second option is to board up windows with 5/8” marine plywood, cut to fit and ready to install. Check your town’s code first to see if this is allowed. n Masking tape does NOT prevent windows from breaking. n Be sure trees and shrubs around your home are well trimmed. n Take in any toys or other outdoor items. n Repair and clear loose and clogged rain gutters and downspouts. n Secure important documents. n Make sure all family members know how to turn off water, gas and electricity and dial 911. n Turn off propane tanks. n Strengthen garage doors. Hurricane winds can enter through a damaged garage door, lift the roof, and destroy the home. n Have your NOAA Radio powered up and on during the storm threat, even while you sleep. n Stay indoors during the hurricane and away from windows, skylights and glass doors. In an Apartment/Hi-Rise: n Keep in mind winds are stronger at higher elevations. n Condo owners should have impact- resistant glass for doors and windows. n Make sure all exits are clearly marked in the hallways. n Memorize where the stairs are in case the hall goes dark from loss of power. n Never take the elevator in an emergency situation, use the stairs. n If you have a balcony or terrace, secure all items on it. They can become airborne and damage your apartment or your neighbor’s. n Make sure your renter’s or condo’s insurance policy is up to date. AN EASY WAY TO PREPARE FOR A HURRICANE GOT A CAMERA?
